What are the benefits of being a member?
The primary benefit to you of joining NCJW/LA is being part of a group of like-minded women who share a rich tradition of social activism and community service. Even more important, though, is what your membership means to our community. Your support of NCJW/LA directly improves and enhances the lives of those most in need through a wide range of programs and services, including our free counseling Talkline that helps women and families become self-sufficient, contributing members of our society, and our art and literacy programs for hundreds of children that enrich their learning experiences and help them to succeed academically. In addition, your membership includes subscriptions to the national magazine and the local newsletter, a 20% discount on all Council Thrift Shop purchases, and invitations to all NCJW/LA educational, public policy, social and fundraising events. You also become part of a unified voice of people that advocate on issues impacting the lives of women, children and families locally, statewide and nationally.

Are all members of NCJW/LA Jewish women?
No, we have many men who are members and volunteers. We also have men and women who are not Jewish who are members and volunteers.
Are all those that NCJW/LA helps Jewish?
No, NCJW/LA helps the entire community; whoever is in need without regard to race, religion, gender, nationality, language spoken or sexual orientation.
Do you help those who don't speak English?
Yes, we have staff and volunteers who are multilingual, as well as social workers and/or volunteers who speak Spanish.
What percentage of the money NCJW/LA raises goes to programs?
Almost 80 - 85% of the money raised by NCJW/LA goes to funding programs.

I work full time. When can I volunteer?
We have volunteer opportunities that include evening, daytime, monthly and one-time projects covering Women Helping Women Services, Women Helping Children programs, advocacy and Council Thrift. What is the history of NCJW?
Hannah G. Solomon called on women to shape the destinies of American lives at the Women's Congress of the 1893 World's Fair. The Los Angeles Section was established in 1909, sixteen years after the national organization was founded. We are at the forefront of social change, taking on issues such as child welfare, women's rights and reproductive freedom. NCJW works through a program of research, education, advocacy and community service to improve the quality of life for women, children and families.
Where are you located and where are your programs conducted?
NCJW/LA Council House, our local headquarters, is located at 543 N. Fairfax Avenue, one block south of Melrose, in Los Angeles. Our programs are held throughout the Los Angeles area.
What is the age of the members?
Our mission and programs attract women and men of all ages with a wide range of interests.
Do you raise money for Israel?
We raise money to support our Israel programs, including Yad B'Yad and Women to Women. These programs help at-risk Jewish and Arab youth throughout Israel, provide advocacy on women's and children's issues, and support initiatives that help women in need.
